Professional Ship Simulator Preview

A systems-first maritime sim — impressive hydrodynamics, unfinished career edges.

Review and Preview

Professional Ship Simulator is the Aerosoft-published, SWE Systems-developed PC sim formerly shown as NauticXP. It is a single-player Unreal Engine 5 maritime sandbox aimed at people who thought previous ship games were too arcade. Steam Early Access is scheduled for 16 September 2026. This page is a preview based on the public demo, official feature lists, and creator hands-on sessions — not a post-launch score.

If you want a practical syllabus instead of a verdict, start at getting started. If you want to know whether to wishlist, keep reading.

What already feels distinctive

The pitch is hydrodynamic honesty. Propeller torque and wheel effect, bank effect, wind and current drift, cargo mass, anchor behaviour, and line tension are named on the Steam page because they are the product. Clickable bridges, radar with AIS/CPA, sonar, radio, and a power chain from battery to generator to engine are not optional overlays. Creator previews — including full-size cruise ship handling — keep coming back to the same surprise: the water is doing more than bobbing a mesh.

Scenery is the other half of the pitch. Rügen and the Strait of Dover are real-scale boxes with lights, marks, wildlife, and AI traffic. That is a different fantasy than a menu of disconnected ports. It also means your first hour can be spent being a bad navigator in a real fairway, which is either delightful or infuriating depending on why you bought a ship sim.

Input flexibility is real. Keyboard layers, gamepads, joysticks, and per-ship profiles are first-class. See controls. If you hate mapping axes, this is not your genre.

Who should wait, and who should demo tonight

Demo tonight if you already like Farm Sim / flight sim levels of procedure, you have a mid-high PC (the minimum is a GTX 1080 Ti class 8 GB card on Windows 11), and you are happy to learn docking as a skill. The free demo is the honest sales pitch.

Wait or stay sceptical if you want arcade handling, extra player sessions (there are none), a finished 1.0 career, VR on day one (fans ask, the team has sounded open, it is not a launch feature), or a huge ship list with every global port. Launch fleet is a focused set of workboats and merchants — see the ships hub. Modding is explicitly not in the Early Access launch build.

Graphics opinions in comment sections are noisy. This is a systems sim first. If you need Microsoft Flight Simulator-level city density, you will complain. If you need the ship to feel heavy, you are the audience Aerosoft is chasing.

Early Access caveats

SWE Systems say they want to leave Early Access around mid-2027, depending on feedback. The current-state FAQ on Steam lists two main sceneries, eight mission types, and a first set of tutorials. That is a foundation, not a complete professional academy. Tutorials are still being improved. Some demo streamers hit unfinished autopilot moments and swapped to hand-flying — which is fine, but it is a reminder you are buying a live project.

Price was not listed as a stable public number in the store payload we checked while the game was still coming soon. The developer statement is that the Early Access price will hold during EA and may change at full release. Do not treat rumour figures as fact.

Languages on Steam include English with full audio (text-to-speech, not a staged voice cast), plus interface/subtitles for French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Polish, and Russian. This wiki localises English, French, German, and Spanish.

Verdict going into launch week

As a wishlist: yes, if realistic handling is the feature you have been missing. As a “buy day one and live in career for 200 hours”: only if you accept Early Access friction and you already enjoyed the demo’s physics. Use system requirements, the roadmap, and official links before you spend money. Then come back to the guides hub when the first patch moves a harbor wall or a keybind.

This is an unofficial preview. Always confirm dates and hardware on the Steam page.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you take the helm.

Is this a review of the 1.0 release?

No. Early Access is scheduled for 16 September 2026. This is a demo-and-docs preview.

Does it have multiplayer?

No. It is single-player with AI traffic and online rankings.

Is the demo worth installing?

Yes, if you are on the fence. Physics and cameras are the whole argument; the demo is where you feel them.

Will it run on Steam Deck?

Steam listed compatibility as unknown. Treat it as a Windows desktop sim until that changes.
